Worth considering
I was asked a few years ago if I intended starting training classes in various communities. I did look up the internet regarding this and was able to assess the prospect. Presently there has to be a minimum of ten dog owners per night at eight pounds average cost each. Eighty pounds an hour? An excellent idea!! Except, when I thought deeper in to it there were a few training issues/problems that made me decide against starting running these classes.
1. If there are ten owners with ten dogs, that allocates six minutes in any one hour to each individual owner and dog if the time was to divided fairly. I would then have six minutes to assess and correct any training and obedience issues with both dog/owner. This would be done in an area with a lot of distractions. Distractions are not good! Neither is the time allocation for the individual.
2. No two dogs are the same. Lots would have different problems and would have to be treated differently, Therefore, I would not be able to train all the dogs at the same time. If I had singled out an individual to help with a behaviour issue what are all those other dogs doing when i am assisting that person? Learning to be unruly?
3. Owners that have used community classes in the past were asked for a unbiased opinion about these sessions. Most reported to me that in a lot of cases their dogs would behave perfectly whilst inside at a training class, but once the dog was let loose outside it was literaly uncontrolable.
The Answers.
A1. Over one pound per minute at the training class for only six minutes in an hour. We charge thirty pounds for a full hour. Nearly at third of the price and you have my total attention! I pride myself that most owners only need two, one and a half hour sessions at £45 per session. This is a total of ninety pounds and DOESN'T span over ten weeks !
A2 The dog and the owner is assessed individually and problems rectified accordingly. This is not general training with sit, stay, roll over, give a paw etc. In my eyes these are tricks which i have no interest in. In two sessions i aim to have your dog walking to heel and coming back (recall) to a whistle. WE USE NO FOOD FOR TRAINING DOGS!!
A3. No if's , but's or excuses! We train outside! You will NEVER create the scenario's that happen when out walking your dog when you are in a church hall. That is why so many dogs behave inside and not outside. We concentrate initially on obedience training. If there are owners who want to go to the next level and use their dogs to work at shoots etc then we will assist with that once their dog has reached an acceptable level of obedience.
On a positive note, classes are excellent for the socialisation of your dog and this is something to be encouraged.
My local "dog friendly" pub is excellent too!
For eight pounds, which is the price of an hours training at a class, I am able to socialise my dogs, have a good laugh in good company, and get change from eight quid after buying a few pints of Guinness. Now that sounds better!! Cheers !!!
